Connecting Technology to Advance Social and Economic Opportunities
University of Toronto
December 13, 2017
This event launches the NSERC Strategic Project “Green software-defined platform for smart city big data applications”, recently awarded to the University of Toronto and the École de technologie supérieure ( ETS ) of Montreal. The project will run for three years, over the course of which we will work with industry and government partners from the GTA and Montreal to experiment on applications and explore the role of the Internet of Things in smart cities.
Smart cities are not primarily about technology, so a major focus of this event is to relate technology research to real city needs. The event is particularly timely given the November 23 announcement of the Smart Cities Challenge by the Government of Canada, which “hopes to forge new partnerships and networks to realize outcomes for residents and empower communities to innovate”. We share those goals for our research but we need your help to realize them.
The first part of the event will provide overviews from international smart city projects and the new NSERC project. We will then have a panel on smart city funding in Canada. The goal in the second part of this event is to relate technology research to real city needs. We will breakout into groups with the task of identifying smart city opportunities. After reporting from the groups, we will have an interactive session where we develop a set of Next Steps on what can we do as a community to advance smart cities in Canada.
